Fierce Bitches by Jedidiah Ayres

fierceI know it’s still early in 2013, but I’m already calling it. Jedidiah Ayres’ novella Fierce Bitches will be one of the best books I read all year. Filled with violence on a biblical scale, Fierce Bitches shocked me with prose that borders on poetry. When I first sat down to read it, my intent was to read it a section at a time in between some of my own writing and editing. I was drawn into the story by Ayres’ carefully crafted use of language. Two hours later I was finished, stunned, and wanting more.

South of the border there is a hellish town filled with gringos on the lam and populated with a colony of desperate whores doing anything they can to get by. Fierce Bitches is an allegorical tale of survival and deliverance doled out from the most unlikely source imaginable. In addition it is filled with some pretty fierce bitches.

It is hard to explain the feeling of enjoyment this book brought. With such a bleak and brutal world you would expect it to be a little harder to get through, but the way Ayres uses language really made it impossible to put down. I got that ahhhh feeling as soon as I started reading, like a hot cup of cocoa on a cold day or a punch to the gut sugar on top. Ayres makes noir look easy, and I cannot recommend this book enough.

You can preorder Fierce Bitches now at the Crime Factory. Give it a try. I promise you’ll love it.
